Mountain House Has Suspended #10 Can Sales

Filed under: General, Collapse admin @ 4:25 pm
I have just received notice (with no warning) that Mountain House (Oregon Freeze Dry) has suspended all FUTURE sales of #10 freeze dried products, effective immediately. This is not a joke - this is not a future post - NOBODY PANIC.
All existing orders already received will be filled. Let me say this again all existing orders already received will be filled. Mountain House expects to fill all of their existing orders by mid-July (for the most recent orders, older orders will undoubtedly ship sooner).
Mountain House says maybe they will offer their #10 cans this fall well see. Pouch products were NOT mentioned, so I assume they are still available and Ive left these up on the site.
Savinar must still have me on his mailing list (please remove me), because this is where I learned Nitro-Pak has also just announced the same thing, they get their products from the same source I do.
Looks like my predictions keep coming true. But Im not receiving any awards or recognition for the truth just one panicked idiot and a few inquiries.
My warnings have been clear and on this blog for years now. Its already past time for many of you to take this stuff seriously.

No indication of why?

OK, if you were waiting for the last minute ... that was it.

Good way to put it.

Fortunately, I've always been of the "better 10 years too early than one minute too late" mind....especially with something that has a virtually lifetime shelf life.

Odd thing I didn't get an email but I see all MH products listed on Nitro-Pak and other sites tho, with SafeCastle as the exception having apparently removed the product. I still have one more large order on the way and I notice that delivery takes longer each time.

Good thing freeze dried food is totally uneccesary. :D

Seriously don't panic over luxories. You can almost buy an entire years supply of wheat from LDS for the price of a single case of mountain house.

US announces deal to send 500,000 tons of food to NKorea

WASHINGTON - The United States said Friday it has reached a deal with North Korea to provide 500,000 metric tons of food aid over the coming year to the closed-off communist nation.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080516/...us_nkorea_food

Black Blade: The food is going to N. Korea, Myanmar, Africa, etc. and any other disaster zone. It is said that FEMA has been building up stores for the last couple years. Personally I prefer freeze-dried for longterm and have canned and dry bulk for shorter term needs. Heck, a friend and I just got a side of Bison each being prepped at the butcher and I may jerk some of that.

The deal with this MH move is what has been the case for the last several months ... demand for this food has been overwhelming since the global food crisis started to become mainstream. It is no surprise--this move had been telegraphed in recent months by both MH and the mainstream media for that matter.

MH pegs their particular level of canned-food business at FIVE times the level it was a year ago at this time (coming from the whole spectrum of customers--not just government and aid orgs). They are way beyond capacity to keep filling orders at this pace. So they are shutting off the spiggot to all but their biggest, oldest dealers out there (who do at least $50K a month in business with them). Unfortunately--those dealers are also the guys with the most overhead and charge the highest prices for the stuff.

Pouches remain OK and available. Fact is, they are actually very comparable in price to the canned foods, calorie for calorie, dollar for dollar. The only difference is that cans are good for 25-30 years, while pouches are rated at 7 years. At this point, that difference seems to be irrelevant to the current global situation, IMO.

Note--ALL OTHER EMERGENCY FOOD WHOLESALERS are in the same boat--or actually are even worse off, with imminent stock depletions in a widening range of food varieties. Those who say it may be too late now to get in preps ... well, I'm afraid that's about the size of it .... at least till fall when there may be a minor uptick in the situation if some great harvests come in.

Emergency food seems to be a fair barometer of the broader food situation out there--just a step ahead of the rest of those bigger food markets. Bottom line--things are getting worse fast. If you can find food at a good price now that you like, that will store for a while, and that you will eat before it goes to waste--jump on it and make the investment.

Most MH meals have about 220 calories. Can one survive long term on that? I think I remember that the Nazis gave their slave laborers about the same ration. 600 calories a day would get 6 months work out of them before they would die.

I hope they didn't find some employee was pooping in the cans! That would be a bad thing.

The prefab meals seem to have gone first. You can still get freeze dried fruits and veggies in #10 cans from various suppliers, and lots of beans and grains locally here.

No serious shortage yet, but if I had not started putting away long shelf life food, I would get busy fast.

Sounds to me like the government has bought out mountain house production for some time frame. I think the story of MH suspending sales does have some validity to it.

Re: Mountain House Has Suspended #10 Can Sales

I wouldnt write too much into this. From what Ive been reading these food companies operate pretty close to thier max output levels. It only takes a little Main Stream Media news to awaken a few sheep and orders quickly exceed their supply ability.

I think what it means to us is good for us who got some, and dont forget we can still put up our own supplies with canning and dehydration. We arent totally locked out, just locked out of a couple suppliers. We still have plenty of options to get our pantries in order.

This could be a wake up call for those of us sitting on the fence that maybe its time to get our houses in order.Because if/when it really does become critical its too late at that point, as this example clearly points out to some degree.
